Under 17 South Scotland WinThree of Kyles players, Innes, Cammy and Zac played in the U 17 Scotland game on Sunday 2nd October and helped bring the title back to the South after 10 years of North wins. A fantastic game won in the last few minutes, true Kyles style. Innes was a legend in goal, again!

Kyles Athletic 2 Newtonmore 1

A fantastic team effort at Mossfield Park, Oban today saw Kyles lift the Artemis MacAulay Cup for the first time since 1989. The never say die attitude of the boys in blue saw them snatch victory in the final few minutes as a strong and determined Newtonmore team started to tire.
The first half saw Kyles have the advantage of the wind, but it was Newtonmore who started the stronger, with veteran keeper Kenny ‘Donga’ MacDonald being called upon to produce some saves of the highest quality. As the game raged from end to end the Newtonmore keeper managed to deflect a well-struck shot from Thomas Whyte on to the post and away to safety.
With half time looming a speculative pass and a mistake in the Kyles defence saw the ball break to John MacKenzie who lashed an unstoppable shot beyond Kenny.
Half time- Kyles 0 Newtonmore 1

The second half saw more of the same, with Kyles occasionally getting drawn into a physical battle that does not suit them. Referee Deek Cameron was called upon on a couple of occasions to calm down proceedings.
Time was now against Kyles, the clock was ticking down and Newtonmore were looking relatively comfortable with their 1-0 lead. This young Kyles side however do not know when they are beaten and after a scramble the ball fell to Dunkie Kerr who’s initial push shot was well saved by the keeper but as the ball fell to him for a second time he made no mistake slamming the ball into the net for an well deserved but unlikely eighty seventh minute equaliser. That goal would surely take the game to extra time!!!
The final cruel blow for Newtonmore came only two or three minutes later when Roddy MacDonald out paced the defender to smash a shot across the keeper and into the net to seal a famous victory.
The man of the match award went to Robbie MacLeod who put in a solid ninety minutes of skill and commitment, but every player did their bit to bring the second piece of silverware home in what is fast becoming a great season for the Kyles.
The next target is the league and I really believe anything is possible from this young team if they are prepared to work for it.
Congratulations boys have a great night, you deserve it…

The Glasgow Celtic Society cup final.
Kyles v Oban Camanachd, The Winterton, Inveraray 25/6/11

The Winterton at Inveraray provided a great venue for the 107th Glasgow Celtic Society cup final, with both teams looking to take home the old trophy.
Kyles started well putting the Oban defence under continued pressure. That pressure looked to have paid off as Roddy Bones MacDonald found himself with a great chance in front of goal but his finish was unusually Seboesque and did not trouble the keeper.
After twenty seven minutes it was that man MacDonald again, this time he did find the target, finishing off a fine move to put Kyles desevedly one nil up.
It was down to Kenny MacDonald, the senior partner of the father son team to make the next telling contribution. Kenny pulled off a fantastic save from a very well struck Oban free hit, that allowed Kyles to go in at half time with a deserved one nil lead.

The second half saw Oban come a bit more into the game, but with Oban not looking like scoring and Kyles not looking like they were going to get the second goal needed to kill off the game, it became a bit of a stalemate.
The game was to explode into life after eighty two minutes when with the Oban defence claiming a kick Fraser MacDonald made it two nil and the cup looked to be on its way to Tighnabruaich.
Oban however had other ideas and were thrown a lifeline when referee Billy Wotherspoon to everyones amazement sent of Donald Irvine of Kyles. Seemingly using the eyes in the back of his head he judged an innocuous challenge a straight red card. The lack of any sort of appeals process means Donald now misses the next two matches.
Within a minute of the sending off Oban had pulled one back through Scott MacMillan, it was to be too little too late however and Kyles held on to claim the Celtic cup.

A good team performance and a good platform on which to build for the rest of the season, that season starts on Saturday with another visit to The Winterton to take on Inveraray in the Camanachd cup.
Kyles have had a good start to the season, but still have a bit more to give performance wise, if this can be done, who knows what this season can deliver.

Kyles v Bute. 18.6.11

Artemis Macaulay Cup 2nd Round Kyles v Bute.

Kyles were expecting a tough game at The Playing Fields against a strong Bute side, they were not to be disappointed, it was as tough a test as the boys have faced all season, Bute will consider theirselves very unlucky to be defeated in extra time.
Kyles started well enough with a well taken goal from Dunkie Kerr after 9 mins, however the boys from Bute were giving as good as they got and despite making chances they found themselves two behind with another good finish from Dunkie Kerr. An own goal from Sandy MacVicar gave Kenny no chance and seemed to give Bute a lifline in the game, this seemed to be snatched away after 34 minutes when Roddie Bones MacDonald made it three one, a lead Kyles would take to the half time break.
Despite Kyles starting the second half strongly, Bute went on to dominate the last half hour and deservedly took the game to extra time with goals from Graham Fisher on 80 and Robert Walker on 85 drawing them level.
Kyles were now seeing their unbeaten run sevearly tested and during extra time it was anybodys game, however after 118 minutes is was that man Dunkie Kerr who grabbed his third goal and decided the contest.
This weeks plaudits go to Bute who will be relishing the prospect of entertaining Kingussie at home in the Big Cup in a couple of weeks time.

Newtonmore 1 Kyles 1 16.4.11
Kyles dropped their first points of the season on Saturday away to reigning champions Newtonmore.
Kyles got off to the worst possible start, conceding a penalty after only nine minutes which was duly despatched by Newtonmores Glen MacKintosh. The away side went on to produce a poor first half performance and were perhaps fortunate to go in 1-0 down at the interval.
Thomas Whyte who seemed to be on some sort of love in with his opposite number and Grant Irvine who will soon have to start showing some fight, heart and character to match his undoubted ability were particular offenders in a inept first half.
The second half was a different story however with Kyles being totally dominant. Grant Irvine grabbed a goal on 73 minutes to level the scores. The boys could have gone on to win the game but overall a draw was a fair result.
This weeks special mention must go to Stormin Norman Macdonald whos half time tactical changes changed the match for the men from The Kyles.
To sum up a good away point against a quality side, however I wonder what will happen when we actually turn up for both halfs of a game instead of only one which has become the trend this season.

Kyles Athletic AGM 2011-02-06
Scott Turner Kyles president thanked sponsors Artemis and Kames Hotel for their continued support. Scott also thanked and congratulated the team managers and their squads on a good season on the park, the 1st team were congratulated for a good consistent season but it was also mentioned they must win some silverware to progress as a team for the future.

The second team were congratulated on winning the South division 2 title and reaching the Bullough cup final. Scott stated South division 1 would be a big challenge for them but their promotion was a great achievement for the club.
Scott thanked Russell Thorburn for all his efforts and years as a valued committee member as he has now decided to step down from his role. I am sure we all appreciate Russels efforts over the years.

Scott also thanked the primary school coaches who do a great job and encouraged them to keep going to produce future Kyles players.

Rhona Whyte in her role as treasurer reported that while club finances were strong the lottery maybe needed to be pushed as ticket sales were slightly down and encouraged the players to sell more tickets.

The new committee was elected which resulted in five new members Peter Mobeck, Ken Coley, Chris Moss, Fraser Macdonald and Kerr Crawford. I’m sure we will all welcome them and look forward to what they can bring to the club. (for a full committee list see news)
Finally team management was decided for the forthcoming season with the first team being left in the capable hands of Norman and Fraser while the second team have the trio of Roddy MacColl, Tom Whyte and Willie Thoms to guide them through the season. With James Perlich taking care of fitness for both squads.

We hope for a successful season with maybe a little silverware to show off come the end.

South Division2 Champions.

Marine Harvest South Division 2 Champions.
Bute 1 Kyles Athletic 8

Manager Roddy Dunder MacColl took his team to Bute this weekend hoping to clinch the South division 2 championship.
Kyles fielded a strong team and it didnt take long for Uncle Dunder to show his boys the way, with the opening goal after only 10 minutes and although he managed another 20+ shots he was not to find the net again (more Ronald MacDonald than Ronald Ross).
Veteran striker Peter Mobeck was next to find the net, adding a brace on 15 and 49 mins. Three nil and Kyles were now cruising, further goals from Mink, Moose, Inky and Goose along with the completion of a fine hatrick by Mobeck who showed that being old, grey and blind is not a barrier to goalscoring wrapped up a fine win for Kyles. Bute did grab a consolation goal when they attacked en masse in an attempt to get on the scoresheet.
The boys finish off the season with a visit to Aberdour this weekend where they will be hoping to receive the division 2 trophy in recognition of their fine season.
